  • As video game editors, we get to attend many gaming events; some leave a lasting impression, and, well... some don't. A handful of GamePro editors got together last night with THQ and a ton of other videogame writers to attend a fun-filled evening of destruction with Red Faction: Guerrilla's multiplayer offerings, and within minutes we were crushing skulls and toppling buildings with the best of 'em. Here are our multiplayer impressions, enjoy!

    Modes of Mayhem

Andy: First off, I think that my favorite mode we checked out last night was Demolition. That was the mode where you protect one teammate as he trashed the crap out of the buildings and structures in the environment... and tried not to get killed.

Travis: He was called "The Destroyer," and it rotated through players on each team after The Destroyer died. It was fun to use the Tremor backpack that levels surrounding structures, the Rhino backpack that charges through anything, or just toss mines.
    [Follow Travis on Twitter]

Tae: I took the sneaky approach. I used the jetpack to enter a building's second level and started to bash away with the sledgehammer. Few opponents thought to look for me high up and I could tons of damage before anyone found me.
    [Follow Tae on Twitter]

Andy: Yeah, I took a different approach too. I looked around for the cloaking backpack and started bashing away with the hammer. Speaking of the hammer, I don't think I've been more satisfied crushing objects in a game than with the sledgehammer in RF:G.

Tae: One of the better melee weapons I've ever used in a game for sure.

Travis: Did THQ say the Ostrich hammer is an unlockable weapon through the multiplayer ranks?

Andy: I think so, I know they mentioned after the April Fool's prank that you'd be able to use it in the game, so that makes the most sense.

Tae: Yeah. They challenged everyone to unlock it but I don't think anyone did. I'm guessing it involves racking up a large number of melee kills. After each match, you got XP that would unlock bonuses.

    Bonus Round

Travis: The bonuses were pretty cool. I unlocked an XP bonus that gave me a boost when I bludgeoned an enemy next to my teammate.

Andy: I wasn't keeping track of my XP as much as I should have; those chicken skewers were calling my name between matches. I did like how you could switch teams on the fly between matches though, or go into spectator mode if you were indisposed by... chicken skewers.

Tae: I think my favorite aspect of the multiplayer was utlizing the special backpacks. Each one seemed to give you a different strategic option and it was easy to swap them on the fly. That really helped the game standout in my mind.

Travis: I saw Tae using the most awesome backpack-weapon combo: Concussion backpack to knock enemies off their feet, and then he'd follow up with a hammer to the dome.

Tae: I thought that the on-screen icons made it fairly easy to locate mission objectives. I liked that the critical buildings had a glowing outline. I wish it was easier to locate backpacks and weapons, though.

Andy: The funniest moments were when you felt the victory of toppling a structure, only to find yourself either dead or really low on life as it crushed you.

Andy: I'll try to remember to get out of the way next time.

Awesome coverage GamePros. I like the convo >

I enjoyed the demo and definitely plan on getting the game soon after launch.

And yes, the hammer is very, very satisfying.

That player is actually using one of the backpacks that allows you to fly around for a short period of time. Other packs let you smash through structures or cloak your character, making him practically invisible.

OH, that explains it hahaha. Wow, that will make multiplayer a lot harder if enemies can fly around and become invisible! Pretty cool stuff.
