  • There was a lot of focus on three games at the Konami Gamer's Night event, but none piqued my interest like Silent Hill: Shattered Memories for the Nintendo Wii. SAW: The Video Game came in a close second with its treacherous-traps gameplay and Silent Hill play style. Six Days in Fallujah falls in third, but I'm not touching that controversial Modern warfare shooter. So, we're back to Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, which is a re-imagining of the first Silent Hill game on the PS1 - the best game of the series in my opinion - and is built from the ground up to fully utilize the Wii Remote.

    iPwn Touch

As a flashlight, cell phone, digital camera and static radio, the Nintendo Wii Remote is more than just a controller in Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, it becomes a necessary tool like an extension of your body to interact with the world. For example, one simple obstacle pitted the game's main character in a locked room. The only way out is to find the key and unlock the door. Searching the room, the player finds three aluminum soda cans in the bed of a trailer hitch. By reaching at the soda cans with the Wii Remote and grabbing hold with the A and B-buttons, the player can pick up, shake, and turn the cans over to find the key.

The primary function of the Wii Remote, however, appears to be that of the player's flashlight, illuminating objects in the world and casting impressive dynamic shadows. Additionally, the speaker in the Wii Remote will emit static when enemies are nearby and transmit radio broadcasts and incoming calls from the cell phone.

The cell phone looks quite impressive allowing the player to make phone calls, store information, and doubles as a digital camera. Taking pictures with the camera may reveal unseen, ghostly characters and helpful items in the world. For example, the player took a picture of a seemingly abandoned swing set, but the picture revealed a young, ethereal girl sitting solemnly on the swing set.

    Combat-less?

Although we saw no direct combat, nor did we get to play the game, the player sure did a lot of running away from menacing enemies. To heighten the tension, it appears certain parts of the game swoops the camera around in front of the fleeing character so you can see the enemies in tail. We also witnessed the player ducking under a low wall, but nearly missed his escape and was pulled out by his legs engaging in a button-mashing event with a gnarled enemy.

This was only the first look at Silent Hill: Shattered Memories on the Nintendo Wii and we can't wait to see more. Stay tuned to GamePro.com for more incoming information on this frightening re-imagining of one of the scariest games ever made.

Awesome, good to see this isn't a remake(even better to see that the Wii is the lead console and they're watering down the other versions lol)
