Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Preview - PS3

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen isn't just another tie-in title for an upcoming summer blockbuster. It just might be one of the better-looking titles we've seen all year. Giant robots, enormous levels, and more explosions than Michael Bay could fit into a film reel might just make Revenge of the Fallen one of the most explosive games of 2009, if not the best Transformers game ever.

  • When you make a game about giant robots, it's pretty much guaranteed that you're going to need an insane amount of visual effects: big explosions, huge set pieces, shiny graphics and the whole kitchen sink. A recent demo of the Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen game proves one thing beyond a doubt: this game looks and plays like a Michael Bay movie. That's not a smarmy joke or a laugh at the director's expense, either - RotF promises more playable characters than any previous Transformers game, and the ones we've already seen look as ridiculously well-detailed as their film counterparts. Add that in with some impressively smooth gameplay and incredibly large levels and we've got a serious contender for the best action game of the summer.

Just like the upcoming summer film, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is showing some seriously impressive graphics and visual effects.

    Back in the Camaro

Obviously, Revenge of the Fallen will stick pretty close to the plot of the summer movie, following Sam Witwicky and his Autobot pal Bumblebee as they try to defeat a new wave of Deceptions terrorizing the globe. But the similarities stop right there. Like the previous Transformers movie tie-in game, you'll have a wide choice of characters from the get-go, thanks to the game's Faction and Non-Faction modes. Depending on the side you choose, you'll either conduct Autobot missions alongside the U.S. military or cause as much destruction as possible with the remnants of the now-Megatron-less Decepticon soldiers.

Surprisingly, the combat in Revenge of the Fallen looks to be much better paced than its predecessor. During a search-and-destroy mission with Ironhide in Shanghai, we watched as the developers started the level firing on enemy units, then transforming in the middle of a heated firefight and taking to the streets to hit their next mission objective. The actual transformation commands look as good as it does in the movies, with the motion now able to be used as a killing blow. This means that Bumblebee can now bum rush a faraway opponent by pulling off a flip-kick when shifting from Camaro to robot and immediately start firing off some homing missiles without missing a beat. Players can also lay down plenty of gunfire if they're on the run, making the choice between car and robot crucial for successfully getting around the levels.

Characters like Starscream will be able to attack in any mode, even if they're hovering in mid-air or using their disguised vehicle forms to get around an area.

Amazingly, the buzz around the office is *really* positive about this game. Hmm...

I'll wait for the final build before getting my hopes up. Same thing happened with Star wars TFU.

Just like GamePro hypes every other game, then pans them in their reviews... These are the people who put a G.I. Joe game on the cover of their magazine. Thanks, but I'll hold my breath.

Star wars tfu was awesome. But the first transformers game sucked big time. I dont think i'll look too much into this one.

didn't they hype up the first game just like this? and no one needs to be reminded of that games quality control.

Okay. Five'll get you ten that this goes the same way as the "Wanted" game - all this hype how it's the best game evarrrrrrrr, and it'll get maybe three stars. Seriously, guys. This is why I don't read anything except actual reviews.

i think it looks great. They probably improved the game a ton since the first one was so bad. They know what to do right now. And star wars tfu was a killer game. No one bag on it.
