Activision's latest gift to fans of super heroes is Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2: Fusion, the sequel to the 2006 game, Marvel Ultimate Alliance.
This action RPG takes full advantage of co-op and multiplayer with up to four players. We got to take a look at the game during GDC this past week. Expect it on shelves sometime this fall.
Civil Super War
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 takes place as the super hero world is at a turning point. The American government has decided to impose a new law that would require all super heroes to register. The super hero society is split down the middle of those for and against the new law. The players are forced to ask themselves which is more important: safety or freedom? Throughout the game you will have to choose a side - Iron Man or Captain America -- fighting against those who oppose you. You and whichever side you choose will have to battle all those who stand in your way.
The game is all about choices. You choose which side to defend and every choice thereafter affects the gameplay experience, everything from which superheroes join your team to the dialogue. The world is on the brink of a civil war and how you play the game determines how the war will end.
Fusion. Fission. Flossin'.
The creators of this game hold true to the sub-title: Fusion. The whole premise of Marvel: UA2 is teamwork. Any two players can fuse their powers together to make a more powerful move. With over 24 characters announced there are plenty of possible combinations, each Fusion co-op move unique. During the meeting at GDC the writer of the game did confirm that there would be some DLC released as well, these would include even more playable heroes. The amount of characters and fusions are limitless.
The plot of the game will not mirror the Civil War comics verbatim. They will, however, keep it fairly close to the original plot but will take some liberties to allow the player complete control over who they are and what side they want to fight on.
There are going to be some new faces in UA2 as well. One new character confirmed at GDC is SongBird, a reformed villain gone superhero. Other characters include the Hulk, Thor, Wolverine, Luke Cage, Nick Fury, Iron Fist and many more. There are still many characters that have yet to be announced.
The graphics in UA2 are much improved over Ultimate Alliance 1 with higher character detail that allows the dynamic camera to zoom in closer than ever. Gameplay was smooth and the ability to perform fusions was, despite the intimidating amount of options, easy to get the hang of. The developers also wanted to make sure that it would be effortless to switch from character to character. They strongly believe that taking full advantage of each hero's unique powers is the way to get the most out of the game.
Fusion will be released on the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, PS2, PSP, and the DS. Each version of the game will have minor differences. Come this fall, which side will you choose -- Liberty or security?

Hulk was only available in the first one as part of the DLC heroes pack. Originally he was not in it.
