Get your ass to Mars in THQ's latest open-world sci-fi adventure.
Red Faction: Guerrilla Previews Table of Contents
When Volition first announced that Red Faction: Guerrilla was going to make a departure from the series' first-person shooter roots to a third-person perspective, many fans were unsure what to think, myself included. After playing a large chunk of the game though, I'm happy to say that the developers have done a bang up job, and RF:G may help reinvigorate the Red Faction franchise.
Red Revolution
The switch to third-person wasn't just a cheap design ploy; Red Faction: Guerrilla is a wholly different game than the past two RF games. The player controls a miner named Alec Mason, who leaves Earth to reunite with his brother who has found work on Mars. Upon arrival, we see that the Earth Defense Force (EDF), who were previously an allied force against the Ultor Corporation in past Red Faction titles, has become an oppressive military group who treat the humans living on Mars like scum and vie for power any chance they get. Unbeknownst to Alec, his brother has joined up with a rebel group known as Red Faction who utilize guerrilla tactics (get it?) to fight the tyrannical EDF. The death of Alec's brother at the hands of the EDF leads Alec to join up with the Red Faction as well.
The first thing we noticed when we picked up the game was that the GeoMod system from past titles has received a massive upgrade, essentially making the landscape of Mars the player's own destructible playground. From the start you are armed with a crude futuristic sledgehammer, which is as versatile as it is deadly. In fact, once we did a little exploration in the first area called Dust, we found it was possible to topple whole EDF structures with a few well-placed swings of the sledgehammer. The physics of Volition's GeoMod 2.0 engine is arguably the closest a game has come to representing real-life destruction in a video game.
When you smash into a concrete wall with your sledgehammer you can practically feel the impact, and when you first discover the neverending glee of placing remote charges throughout a building and blowing it to kingdom come you'll be hard-pressed to find a more satisfying destruction experience in a video game. Additionally, the destructible environments aren't just cardboard props with no real mass; we accidentally crushed ourselves many times by being too close to a toppling structure.

As much as I loved the first Red Faction on the PS2 (one of my favorite games from that system), the sequel was a piece of crap. Hopefully, the third person perspective will give this series a much needed overhaul on the PS3. Now where's that XIII sequel I've been waiting for?

"if you continually kill civilians or Red Faction members a Morale Meter will go down, and you'll find yourself getting attacked by civilians, the Red Faction and the EDF"
Hopefully it's more like GTA than Fallout 3. I tried to create two saves for Fallout 3, one to be good and one to mess around and kill civilians, and i overwrote my good one. Hopefully you can have multiple saves, or at least be able to kill civilians without saving.

Good, i was wondering if you will be able to get crushed. This game sounds better and better the more i hear about it. I can't wait.

Demo was not good.
Remember, Gamepro is getting paid to promte this game.
Gunplay was not fun or cool at all. Blowing up buildings is cool but gets boring because it seems that all you do is go building to building and shoot at it.
Looking at your characters back while the action is going on looked and felt cheap like that Game, Mercenaries.
3rd person felt cheap and is just cheap programming. The Red Faction series has always been a favorite of mine and it been ruined.
AI was right out of 1990. Very arcade like.
Red Faction Guerrilla review 6.5..

Whoa, someone must have taken the money I was supposed to be paid for promoting this game; I never saw a dime! Thanks for the heads up, I'll check with the other editors to see if one of them got the check by mistake.

I got your check by mistake, Andy, so I left it sitting on your desk.
Actually Andy and Travis sounded surprisingly impressed after coming back from the most recent showing (which was much more advanced than that ancient demo). Sounds like the game has solid potential; fingers crossed. I loved the first game.

i know, lol! That's when you know you really pissed them off. He doesnt even know what he's talking about. Gamepro editors are just teasing him now. I hope it's as good as you guys say it is. If any gamepro editors know, does a proximity mine destroy buildings when it explodes? I think i read somewhere that it doesnt and i was thinking that it would suck if it didnt. Before i read that i already had a plan on how to destroy a convoy on a bridge. I was gonna plant a proximty mine at the end so the car in front blows up and the rest cant pass over and i would have a remote charge on the beginning so once the first car explodes, i'd detonate the other side to collapse the bridge. I cant wait for this game, and i wont listen to Allgameconsoles because he doesnt know what he's talking about.

You guys wouldnt have this site if you weren't getting paid. You get a paycheck dont you? Looking at your finacials it looks like you get alot money to promote game, in fact it looks like almost all you money comes from advertising.
Besides your in the game promotion business other wise there would be no need for your Website.

so you think this is one big ad? You're stupid. This is a preview, there is a big difference between a preview and an ad. You see those links on the side that say games like Ninja Blade or Wheelman? Those are ads. You see this 4 page preview? Not an ad, so again, i dont take advice from someone that doesnt know what they're talking about.
