The franchise best known for a killer series of first-person shooters, Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2, has shifted gears to deliver you a portable third-person shooter on the PlayStation Portable, Resistance: Retribution.
Resistance:Retribution Previews Table of Contents
Resistance: Retribution caters to the casual, portable gamer with it's abundance of checkpoints within close proximity of each other as well as its' auto aim functionality. Resistance veterans will be pleased to know that the classic enemies and iconic weapons from the previous installments are intact. With the old comes the new, the new weapons and enemies that is. Of the new additions, the Longbow 1S-1K, 1- Shot 1-Kill, sniper rifle in all its badass glory will most certainly earn a special place in your heart as it did mine.
Control Freak
The controls are especially unique making the game both difficult and easy dependent upon how you choose to play. As aforementioned there is an auto aim functionality which helps to simmer down waves of enemies. But if you want to place your shots just right, you can easily escape auto aim by pressing up on the D-Pad and using the Square, Triangle, Circle, or X buttons according to the direction you want to aim. Besides freeing yourself from auto aim there are a number of other special actions such as opening doors and lending a boost to allies that can be done by using the D-Pad. To move Grayson you need to man the analog nub. There is no button to take cover amidst a battle because it is an automatic action as long as you are near shelter making life as a marine a little sweeter. Last but certainly not least, your primary and alternate fires are assigned to the classic left and right triggers. While covering, all you need to do is hit the right trigger to pop out and deal mass amounts of pain.
Multiplayer X8
Eight makes five in Resistance math, eight players and five different game modes that is. Retribution keeps it classy offering straightforward, well-known modes. The first mode, Team Deathmatch, is exactly as it sounds. Kill the opposing team. If you aren't a team player then Free For All is also available which is simply every man for them self. Capture the Flag is yet another classic game type where you must grab the opposing team's flag and bring it back to your base to score. As for the more interesting game modes there is Containment and Assimilation. Containment is similar to a territories themed game in which you must capture coolant nodes. Capturing the nodes help to increase the overheat time and destroy the opposing teams reactor which is the objective. Arguably the most unique yet simple game mode is Assimilation. A mash-up between Team Deathmatch and Containment, Assimilation pits the Maquis forces against The Cloven. The objective is to convert the Maquis to Cloven. Although somewhat a team game, the player with the highest individual score is the winner and not The Cloven.
