GamePro introduces you to the Pons both old and new in Patapon 2.
With a new sequel comes new Pons. But fear not, they fight alongside the original Pons available in the first game. I have overviewed for your reading pleasure both the original Pons, for all of you new to the Patapon series, as well as the new Pons brought to you by the upcoming Patapon 2.
Hatapon: Your very first Pon, the Hatapon is a flag wielder (hence the prefix Hata which means flag in Japanese) and is crucial to success in each mission. If lost on the battlefield you automatically fail the mission.
Yaripon: Yari, meaning spear, is the type of Pon you get after the Hata and is arguably the most well rounded Pon in the game. When you enter Fever mode by hitting the rhythm perfectly multiple times in a row, the distance of their spear throwing expands and they are better able to avoid attacks.
Tatepon: A melee fighter to the core. These Pons are close-rangers bearing ruthless axes and swords along with handy shields.
Yumipon: The bow (yumi) wielding Pons have the longest range. They are especially useful for hunting as long as pesky wind blowing in the wrong direction doesn't interfere with their otherwise vast distance.
Kibapon: The cavalry has arrived with horses, halberds, and large damage dealing. The Kiba's unit size is capped off at a mere three.
Dekapon: Stocky, slow Pons with large maces. Their close range comes at a slight disadvantage but they do so much damage it doesn't become an issue.
Megapon: A play on the word megaphone, the Megapons are visually very different than the rest of the Pons. They are tall and carry large horns which they use to project lethal sound waves at enemies.
Hero Pon: A customizable Pon to fit you, the player, like a glove. These Pons can be named anything you like. You can unlock new abilities for them via mixing various Hero masks and weapons collected along your journey.
Toripon: Bringing the battle to the sky, the illustrious bird (tori) riding Pons give you an aerial advantage to an otherwise ground-based battle.
Robopon: These Pons are fully equipped with futuristic mechs and a large amount of HP to spare.
Mahopon: Every game needs a magic user and so the Mahopon is born.
All of these Pons can be evolved which is Patapon slang for upgraded to bigger, better things that can give and receive more damage. Each Pon can be optimized with better weapons and armor, which is collected along the way, to your liking or you can automatically have the game do it for you if you aren't the type to waste precious time when you could be hunting or battling.
