We get down and dirty with Guitar Hero: Metallica's awesome new add-on, and show you how balls to the wall metal drumming can be.
Guitar Hero: Metallica may seem at first like an easy cash-in for one of metal's most storied acts in history, but upon further inspection GH: Metallica is a feature-rich addition to the franchise. Most notably the addition of a second bass drum pedal adds a whole new level of difficulty for video game drumming aficionados, and we got a first-look at how this feature will rock the snot out of you as seen here in the Guitar Hero: Metallica video trailer.
Pedal to the Metal
We sat down with lead designer Alan Flores of Neversoft to get a taste of Guitar Hero: Metallica, and it was immediately noticeable how passionate his team was about putting together the game. Flores brought up a story of how blown away he was the first time he saw Metallica as a teen and how they played a major factor in his burgeoning musical interest. Flores noted that when thinking about putting together a Guitar Hero game focusing on one of his favorite bands of all time, that he wanted to get every aspect of their persona down, and that couldn't be done without including Lars Ulrich's signature pounding double-bass blasts that are prominent in many Metallica favorites.
Fueled by Fire
Neversoft brought in their drumming master to help us get a better idea of how the double-bass feature works, and to say the least we were impressed. Playing through the new Expert+ difficulty mode, the drummer railed through "Fuel" and then without catching his breath jumped right into "Master of Puppets." Flores noted during the demo that the pedals designed for GH: Metallica are more responsive and "springier" than the pedals originally released for World Tour, and will feel closer to real electronic drumkit pedals. Also, while the second bass drum is entirely optional, it became apparent during the aforementioned tracks that there is no humanly possible way to get through the songs with only one pedal in the Expert+ mode.
Among other features we're excited about checking out in GH: Metallica, the double bass addition is integral for the distortion-filled noise-fest that's going to shred our faces off this spring when the game releases. OK.. I thought that Metallica covered all those songs... but guess not... they probably just hand picked these songs for their game.

Welcome Home (Sanitarium) = Yay
No Iron Maiden = Nay
All in all it's gotta be better than Aerosmith, and Expert+ looks awesome. I just wish there were something like Expert+ for Guitar so every song would be like Through The Fire And Flames.

Sounds cool, but this better not be a repeat of Aerosmith. That game sucked (wasn't the music's fault, the game was just badly designed). What I'm wondering is if the GH:WT drum set will be able to get the second bass pedal....
