Resident Evil 5: gameplay and co-op impressions

One of the biggest events at the 2008 Tokyo Game Show was the unveiling of Resident Evil 5, and GamePro has new impressions of the cooperative play and new control schemes.
The 2008 Tokyo Game Show was great for two reasons: 1) The show chose to let the general public attend the final two days instead of thumbing their collective noses at the them like many other gaming shows, and 2) It is here where a much anticipated and playable version of Resident Evil 5 was introduced. This direct sequel to Resident Evil 4 is making some big changes that may draw even more players into the most popular zombie-blasting series of all-time.
Chris brings a new partner, Sheva, to the battle in Resident Evil 5. Sheva can be controlled by the computer or another player, but either way teamwork is crucial.
Cross-Cultural Trip
Since the third game, the Resident Evil franchise has made leaps and bounds outside the city limits of Raccoon City. Resident Evil 4 put the protagonist in a rural European village, while Resident Evil 5 gets even worldlier by putting the main characters on the continent of Africa. The plot of the game will take a look back at the 10 years of Chris Redfield's life since his crazy days in Raccoon City and will also see him and new partner Sheva Alomar battling their way through hordes of Las Plagas-infectees while trying to prevent another bio-chemical disaster. Albert Wesker, a recurring enemy of the human protagonists and former Umbrella employee, will be doing everything in his power to stop the duo.
If the computer is controlling Sheva, you can assign her several different behaviors, including 'Cover' shown below.
Two are better than One
Perhaps the most exciting addition to Resident Evil 5 is the co-op play that will be a central focus of the gameplay. Now, players will no longer have to feel lonely while blasting and beating countless mutants since Sheva Alomar can be used in addition to Chris Redfield. Both online and off-line cooperative play is offered with the latter featuring a split-screen option. The online co-op play, which is becoming increasingly popular these days, lets players enter and leave the game at any point they wish. If you're playing by yourself, your co-op partner will be controlled by the computer. The cooperative play is varied: sometimes players will fight separately, and Chris and Sheva can perform tandem moves such as launching each other across gaps and holes. The co-op style is less Gears of War, more Left 4 Dead.

I will buy this game only to see if it outdoes RE4. But I am still concerned this game is just prettier. I still see no strafing in the gameplay videos at all and the AI doesn't seem to be all that damn smart. The sounds still sound the same as compared to RE4, but I heard that they redid all the audio. I'm skeptical. I'm going to take RE5 for what it's worth now. But I have a hard time of believing at least from what I know right now, that this is going to be GOTY 2009.
