The Conduit

Golden Eye

If I had to compare The Conduit to another game, I'd probably pick the N64 classic, Golden Eye. That and Perfect Dark. The game has a similar vibe that other editors, like Online Features Editor Patrick Shaw, also picked up on. I'm not saying The Conduit is Golden Eye Wii, but it reminded me a little of the finest shooter ever to grace a Nintendo console, so take that for what it's worth. I found the action in Conduit satisfying and the All-Seeing Eye added a nice puzzle element to things. The gameplay was pretty straightforward but it was fun and kept me wanting to see what was around the next corner.

The enemies are also pretty brutal, effectively peppering you with munitions and refusing to be sitting ducks; they constantly ran around, trying to find new angles of attack and ducking behind cover. It made for some intense firefights. It didn't help that the checkpoint system in the build they had wasn't working, which meant you had to get through the entire level without dying (not to brag but I was the first person that day to get through to the end intact-okay, maybe I am bragging a little). But don't worry because the checkpoint system should be in place when the game goes gold and besides which, the game has a Master Chief-like health regen system where if you sit still long enough, you get life back.

Get A Grip

The graphics were pretty good as well; it won't blow away Gears of War 2 or Resistance 2 out of the water but they were adequate for a Wii game. Audio's a wash, as I couldn't hear a damn thing with the convention going on. And then there were the controls: okay, to be fair, the game was in an early stage and the devs are probably working to get everything tightened up but I didn't like the controls too much. The aiming's fairly precise but again, moving the Wii Remote to the extremes of the screen to switch my viewpoint was annoying; I had to constantly adjust my view to get it just right. And when the action got hot and heavy, my view skittered around wildly as I tried to get my bearings.

I also didn't like how grenades were handled: you had to hold down a button on the Nunchuk then do a tossing motion. It's easy to do but the actual forward motion of my hand usually resulted in my grenade flying at a trajectory that I didn't intend. But I adjusted soon enough and the action was good enough that I was able to put aside my distaste for the controls and actually have fun.

Wait And See

Obviously, I have to reserve final judgment until I get my hands on the final build and see what the rest of the game has to offer. But I liked what I saw during my thirty minute hands-on with the title. It's an interesting enough title that has the potential to give Wii gamers a couple of hours of thrills, which is a good thing all around.

^ No one gives a shit if you're first.

I'm psyched for this game. I've been saying it since I first heard about it, it looks great and I can't wait.

The Wii's FPS controls are great. I'm not the biggest FPS fan but I can enjoy them in moderation. I'm looking forward to this. . . it's probably no Metroid though.

You can customize your controls down to the very last detail. That's your problem Tae K. Kim, you didn't customize your controls.

I love Wii's FPS controls... especially in Metroid 3 and MoH Heroes 2. I can't wait to get my hands on this game. Looks very promising!

I dont usually have any problem with Wii first person shooters, even the ones with supposedly bad controls like Red Steel and Medal of Honor Vanguard. And my arms rarely get tired, the way you sit and rest your arms is a major factor. This game looks promising.. still too early to tell yet if it's gonna be a AAA title but if Nintendo is backing the game more than likely it's going to turn out to be quality.
