Off the Field, Off the Wall
Of course, any Mario sports game worth its salt is going to offer up quite a few extra modes, and Mario Super Sluggers is no different. The Challenge Mode is the heart of Sluggers, wherein Mario arrives on an baseball-themed island invaded by Bowser. In order to challenge his perennial nemesis, Mario must recruit a worth team by meeting their various baseball-related challenges like striking out an intimidating batter or directing a few hits to a certain spot on the field. It played out very much like a basic RPG, with plenty of interaction with potential party members and switching between main characters. While there aren't many folks who play Mario sports games without a partner, the entertaining story at play and the multitude of unlockable characters and stadiums (including Mario, Bowser, and Donkey Kong-themed fields, among others, playable at both night and day) could make the Challenge Mode worthwhile.
Mario looks to spice up the game of Baseball bit new modes, features, and fast-paced gameplay.
Of course, for the party-loving fan, Mario Super Sluggers is packed to the rafters with minigames. We got to try out a few, including one where players had to pitch baseballs into the mouths of incoming Piranha Plants and another where players had to break down a wall blocking pitches to an AI-controlled character, but another mode combines a multitude of mini-game styles into the ultimate baseball party game. In Toy Box mode, one player is tasked with hitting while the other three have to catch the ball within a certain time limit. Each player uses a roulette wheel to determine the pitch direction, speed, and the item used in the field. Once the ball is hit, the fielders can attack each other, with one wielding a valuable item like a shell, bomb, or banana. Whoever has the ball at the end of the quick time limit is up to bat. If nobody is in possession of it, then the current batter gets another swing. It's simple, yet addictive and competitive. It's equal parts baseball, Smash Bros., and Mario Kart, and we can't wait to get a few more rounds in the next time we get our hands on this game.
Mario Super Sluggers hasn't been at the plate too long, but we like the look of its swing thus far. We've still got much more to learn about how it plays, but this prospect hasn't let us down before.

Let us not forget, Mario: Household Chores. It'll be the most vacuuming and dusting that little Italian plumber can handle.
