Breaking: Multiplayer announced

Bionic Commando will support up to 10 players online for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. When online, you will bear the armor of an FSA soldier, and can choose different colors for your armor. Players will also be able to "get online and join the Swinger's Club," said producer Ben Judd. The site will track your online stats, rank leaderboards, plus many other features.

The new 3D Bionic Commando should not be confused with its PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade counterpart. Bionic Commando Rearmed is an HD remake of the 1988 NES classic. Bionic Commando, plain and simple, is the re-invented follow-up to the long-running series scheduled for release on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.

Players control a dreadlock-sporting soldier equipped with a 300-lbs. mechanical arm. His attachment projects a sticky grappling hook that can latch onto almost any surface within range. The grappling hook allows players to swing (the basis of the original game), grab onto enemies, and perform special moves such as the zip-kick and barrel toss. For instance, the zip-kick is performed by grabbing hold of an enemy with your grappling hook, leaping into the air, and reeling yourself in like a fish fast enough to "zip and kick" your opponent square in the chest. It's a fast and powerful move that kills soldiers in one hit and stuns the bigger foes.

It takes decent hand-and-eye coordination to connect swings in Bionic Commando. And although the swing mechanics are similar to recent Spider-man games, the grappling hook's limited range makes it slightly more difficult to control. The level designs will assist your swing at first, progressively becoming more difficult in the later levels.

"Swooping in to lay waste to a group of enemies is a satisfying moment."

La Tarantula

The latest level showcased at a recent Capcom event revealed a new weapon and mini-boss. The Tarantula rocket launcher is capable of locking onto two targets simultaneously and firing multiple homing missiles. Its ammunition limited but powerful, comprised of enemy-seeking Nikita missiles, famous for their appearance in Metal Gear Solid, that will hit any target at almost any angle. The new mini-boss was comparably easier than the robot gorilla from the Park level, but challenged me vertically. Because the mini-boss was a flighty robotcraft, your strategies are limited. I had already depleted my Tarantula missiles, so I met the boss face-to-face with a mid-air zip-kick.

There's also more than one way to conquer the less spectacular enemies. Soldiers carry pistols, rifles, and shotguns that you can pick up and use. An efficient move is to hook an enemy soldier and pop him while he struggles with your grip. You can also pick up and throw objects, such as cars and rocks, with your grappling hook.

Bionic Commando was a tough sell for me until I stretched my arms and played it. The controls take some getting used to, primarily the swinging scenarios, but the first time you swoop and lay waste to a group of enemies is a satisfying moment indeed.
