Resistance 2 Multiplayer!

GamePro gets first crack at Resistance 2's 60-player online multiplayer mode!

Related Resistance 2 News:

Today, Sony had a huge lineup of games playable at a media event in Hollywood. On display for the first time was Resistance 2 60-player multiplayer. But lucky us, we already played it...a bonus for our upcoming Resistance 2 cover story in the August issue of GamePro magazine. Playable today was the same exact level that we played down at Insomniac Games a couple weeks ago, so if you missed it, make sure to read on for our detailed impressions. It's all great fun.

As huge fans of the first game, getting our hands on this PlayStation 3 sequel is nothing short of a privilege. And today marks just the tip of the iceberg, as GamePro was the sole U.S. media outlet to participate in the first ever 60-player multiplayer play session hosted overseas with select European gaming press.

2006's Resistance: Fall of Man (a sci-fi first-person shooter and a launch title on the PS3) was quite a change for Insomniac Games, the development house known best for its cartoon-y Ratchet & Clank series. And it was a hit. Resistance went on to sell millions worldwide, paving the way for the sequel, Resistance 2.

With Resistance 2, Insomniac is sparing no expense. Featuring 60-player online multiplayer and 8-player online cooperative modes--not to mention an immense single-player campaign--to say the game is ambitious would be an understatement. Today we're focusing solely on online multiplayer, but we'll have much more on all modes come July!

Multiplayer Defined

The focus of multiplayer in Resistance 2 is making the experience intimate. To accomplish this, Insomniac is employing a few important elements. First, the game features a squad system that essentially puts each player into a smaller squad. Playing in a 60-player game would most certainly be overwhelming, so the game will automatically assign you to a four-to-six man squad with specific objectives. The game's artificial intelligence does a lot of the work here to keep things moving in the right direction.

Rewards are also hugely important to keeping players having fun, as well as interested and motivated. For example, during a multiplayer game, certain players may have "2X" or "3X" hovering above their character. This means a character is on a streak, and if you take them down, you'll earn extra points. And the points system rewards you on the fly. Like Call of Duty 4's online multiplayer, you'll amass points for kills and assists. But Resistance 2 takes it to a new level.

If you shoot someone, but don't kill them, you'll see how many points you earn on the fly. Finishing someone off will get you the most points, of course, but you can earn a substantial amount of points for an assist (depending on how much damage you've dealt), and multiple players can earn points from attacking the same enemy.

And finally, the scope of the game is simply enormous. And it'd have to be with 60-players trying to maul each other around every corner. There will in fact be smaller levels, but right now we're focusing solely on a 60-player game.

apparently Gamepro liked all the ps3 games theyve played recently, thats a good sign. so far, these 3 games (Motorstorm 2, Resistance 2, and Killzone 2) are receiving praise everywhere, all around the media......which is definately a good thing. i know one thing......im gonna have ALOT of "2s" in my game collection over the next year or two (Gears of War 2, Killzone 2, Ninja Gaiden 2, Resistance 2, Motorstorm 2, and maybe Bioshock 2, and Mass Effect 2......damn that IS a shit-load of 2s)

Now by millions do they mean a whole 2 million? Lol. Anyways, this game does look pretty damn sweet. But I can't help but think GOW2 will easily trump it, and sell way more copies. Don't get mad, I just really think it will be the better game, GOW was superior to Resistance in all ways, so they can expand on an already quality product. ROFM2 has a little more work to do in the same amount of time. So far it sounds pretty damn sweet. The limited GOW2 I have seen looks incredible. 2 awesome games either way. But what I really want for the PS3 is Killzone 2. That game has a ton of potential, if they can get it right, it will be phenomenal.
