GamePro gets first crack at Resistance 2's 60-player online multiplayer mode!
We go hands-on with Resistance 2's 60-player online mode.
Great news! GamePro will be unveiling a massive Resistance 2 cover story for the August issue of GamePro magazine, and you'll have it in your hands starting July 1! We can't tell you how thrilled we are to host the next big blowout for Resistance 2, one of the most creatively ambitious games of 2008, and we want to get you as excited as we are.
As huge fans of the first game, getting our hands on this PlayStation 3 sequel is nothing short of a privilege. And today marks just the tip of the iceberg, as GamePro was the sole U.S. media outlet to participate in the first ever 60-player multiplayer play session hosted overseas with select European gaming press.
2006's Resistance: Fall of Man (a sci-fi first-person shooter and a launch title on the PS3) was quite a change for Insomniac Games, the development house known best for its cartoon-y Ratchet & Clank series. And it was a hit. Resistance went on to sell millions worldwide, paving the way for the sequel, Resistance 2.
With Resistance 2, Insomniac is sparing no expense. Featuring 60-player online multiplayer and 8-player online cooperative modes--not to mention an immense single-player campaign--to say the game is ambitious would be an understatement. Today we're focusing solely on online multiplayer, but we'll have much more on all modes come July!
Multiplayer Defined
The focus of multiplayer in Resistance 2 is making the experience intimate. To accomplish this, Insomniac is employing a few important elements. First, the game features a squad system that essentially puts each player into a smaller squad. Playing in a 60-player game would most certainly be overwhelming, so the game will automatically assign you to a four-to-six man squad with specific objectives. The game's artificial intelligence does a lot of the work here to keep things moving in the right direction.
The scope of Resistance 2's multiplayer is massive.
Rewards are also hugely important to keeping players having fun, as well as interested and motivated. For example, during a multiplayer game, certain players may have "2X" or "3X" hovering above their character. This means a character is on a streak, and if you take them down, you'll earn extra points. And the points system rewards you on the fly. Like Call of Duty 4's online multiplayer, you'll amass points for kills and assists. But Resistance 2 takes it to a new level.
If you shoot someone, but don't kill them, you'll see how many points you earn on the fly. Finishing someone off will get you the most points, of course, but you can earn a substantial amount of points for an assist (depending on how much damage you've dealt), and multiple players can earn points from attacking the same enemy.
And finally, the scope of the game is simply enormous. And it'd have to be with 60-players trying to maul each other around every corner. There will in fact be smaller levels, but right now we're focusing solely on a 60-player game.
