The 18 biggest surprises in Resident Evil 5 (page 2 of 3)

A powerful Panga knife. The knife is a Resident Evil staple; it's been in every single game. Resident Evil 5 will continue this tradition, but thankfully, the knife will be larger and more powerful - it looks like apanga, judging by screenshots. Need more evidence? The panga is a machete-like weapon and tool of African origin. By giving Chris a more powerful melee weapon, combat will hopefully become more dynamic, placing a greater emphasis on close-quarters fighting and less focus on searching for ammunition.

Sun triggers mirages. Sunblock, people!

Sunlight will offer both offensive and defensive possibilities. We know that sunlight and heat play a big role in Resident Evil 5. Players will have to seek shade to recuperate and avoid the hallucinations that accompany sunstroke and exhaustion. In his interview with Famitsu, Takeuchi said that the team is trying hard to incorporate light and dark into the combat. How this will specifically play out remains to be seen, but one example is already known: Chris will be momentarily blinded when he steps from a dark area into dazzling sunlight. Enemies may also be more vulnerable when it bright light, especially if they are Las Plagas. No word yet on a realistic day/night cycle, but that would certainly make sense.

Laser scopes are handy for headshots.

Laser scopes are handy for headshots.

The laser scope will return. The laser scope debuted in Resident Evil 4, and it made combat more accessible and placed a greater importance on precision shooting. Because daylight plays such a large role in RE5, it's not clear whether of not players will not always be able to rely on the laser scope in bright light. We're betting that players may have to lure enemies into darker areas to get a clearer shot.

A bigger emphasis on gaining high ground. In a fairly drastic departure, Resident Evil 5 is expected to put a bigger emphasis on vertical environments. Judging from the extended trailer, Chris will be able to climb scaffoldings and buildings to evade mobs. We're not expecting any Altair-style free-running, but gaining extra vertical maneuverability sounds like a nice enhancement over RE4.

Chris will carry inventory items on his person. From the look of recent screen shots, Chris will carry his guns and weapons in a more realistic manner. Items such as the compass, knife, and handgun will be carried on his body, allowing players to identify important equipment at a glance. It also looks as if Chris will use a wireless headset. Who is he in communication with? We can't say for sure, but we suspect he'll be getting missions updates and advice from a third-party source. Sherry Birkin? All bets are off...

Weapon mods? We hope so...

Weapon mods? We hope so...

Weapons will be customizable...we think. Due to the fact that many advanced weapons are shown in early trailers, we think that players will be able to customize their weapons to suit their personal taste. In this interview, Takeuchi says that the developers have "greatly increased the number of weapon variations." Though Resident Evil 4 offered limited weapon upgrades, we're betting that Resident Evil 5 will expand on that concept and allow players a wider variety of weapon modifications. Scopes, silencers, and custom ammo? We can only wait and hope.
