Battlefield: Bad Company (Page 2 of 2)

Each of the game's characters portrays a unique personality that promises to add to the game's depth. During its encounters, B-company comes across a large stash of gold bullion, a la Three Kings, and must subvert both friendly and enemy forces to steal the loot. So far the story looks surprisingly interesting for a franchise that's always focused on multiplayer.

Bad Company is built from the ground up with the new engine, Frostbite, that claims to render 90% destructible environments. There are some truly awesome effects in Battlefield, but even still, I couldn't help but find myself wanting that extra 10% destructibility. Sure, you can blow a hole in a house large enough to walk through, but what I really wanted to do was break the support beams and bring the roof down. I could destroy just about everything, but I couldn't do the things I really wanted to do like take out the legs of a radar tower and send it sliding down a hill at my enemies.

Few console games deliver explosions like this.

As for strategy, the destructibility that it does have will definitely add a new dimension to multiplayer FPSs. Whether that dimension will stick to the genre is another question. If it's any indication, I don't see Bad Company touching Call of Duty 4's impeccable multiplayer. However, this may be a case of apples and oranges; Bad Company's destructibility may set it apart enough to be considered awesome in it's own right.

Unfortunately the preview build we received is still very early and without multiplayer capabilities. Because of this, it's hard to say whether it will be one of 2008's must-own titles. However, I can say that Bad Company's campaign mode looks extremely promising and with a finely tuned multiplayer mode, it should not disappoint. The game has solid A.I., great graphics, and the weapons are beautifully reminiscent of the gunplay in the PS2's Black. The best part though, the explosions and destruction might be the best I've seen rendered on the Xbox 360.

At this point, it would be a mistake to let Bad Company cruise under your radar.
