Secret Agent Clank--Developer Interview (Page 2 of 2)

Will the game use the same engine as R&C: Size Matters?

Jason Skiles, Lead Engine Programmer: There's always stuff you want to improve, so there's been a bit of tinkering here and there. It's mostly the same engine we used in Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters, though. We were really happy with it.

What have you learned from Size Matters that will help with the development of Secret Agent Clank?

Jeff Parrot, Environment Artist: Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters turned out great and we're all proud of what we accomplished with it. But at the same time we wanted to see how far we could push the system, story, gameplay, sound, and art with our new title. We're definitely working very hard on it and hopefully the fans will like the end result.

Will Clank utilize any cool new robotic devices?

Ronn LeFeuvre, Gameplay Programmer: Clank, being the expert secret agent, cleverly disguises his weapons as inconspicuous everyday items. What the unsuspecting enemy sees as Clank's bow-tie is actually his Tie-A-Rang, a saw-bladed projectile which ricochets around the room attacking everyone within range. His cuff links do more than just fasten his shirt cuffs; they are actually tiny, but potent, bombs which can be fired at the enemy from afar or even planted on the ground as land mines.

And like any expert spy gear, these devices are more than just high-tech weapons. Their multi-purpose design allows you to utilize them as gadgets as well, like the Tie-A-Rang which can be used to slice apart tethers, gaining access to new areas.

Are you doing anything with Secret Agent Clank that is special or unique on the PSP?

Dave Goodrich, Lead Designer: We wanted to add unique gameplay to the Ratchet series for Clank, making him more of an action hero than in previous installments. For example Clank has to flip, duck, and perform acrobatics through a field of security lasers to sneak into a museum or dance a deadly tango with a femme fatale which leads to an exciting down hill ski chase... Just to name a few new and unique things for Clank.

Are there plans for a multiplayer mode?

Avery Bennett, Designer: For Secret Agent Clank, we'll be focusing solely on the single player experience. As reward for our efforts, you can expect to see even more gameplay and content in Clank's PSP debut, than were in the previous Size Matters (And that's saying a lot, to be bigger than a game with the subtitle, "Size Matters"!).
