With some fine-tuning, Operation Phoenix could fill the void of flight sims on the PlayStation 2.
The Thunderstrike series first appeared on the Sega CD before moving on to delight Flight-sim fans for the 32-bit systems. The game put you in the cockpit of a heavily armed gunship and the latest entry, Operation Phoenix, will feature the same premise but with the expected upgrade in graphics and audio. You?ll embark on seven campaigns, each with various sub-missions, ranging from termination of ?unstable? governments to escorting nuclear materials through hostile territories. In addition to in-depth Campaign missions, there will be an Arcade mode with pick-up-and-play controls for fast gratification. Additional play options will include multiplayer deathmatch and co-operative modes. In an early build of the game that Eidos brought by our offices, Phoenix?s controls required some learning and patience, while the missions featured careful and deliberate pacing as you took out targets from long distances and rarely engaged in close dog-fighting combat. The graphics did a passable job, although the landscapes were plagued by fog and slowdown (blemishes that will be fixed hopefully before the game?s release). With some fine-tuning, Operation Phoenix could fill the void of flight sims on the PlayStation 2.
