Killer App
I will say this about Nintendo, however: they are smart enough to know that no matter how interesting a new piece of hardware is, it's useless if there isn't an accompanying piece of software to take full advantage of it. When they released their "revolutionary" Wii, they wisely paired it with the awesome Twilight Princess, which helped prove the viablity of the motion sensing controls and the platform as a whole.
Well, Nintendo is once again calling upon Link to lend a hand: the Zapper comes with Link's Crossbow Training, a collection of mini-games starring every one's favorite silent princess saver. I got to play a couple of stages and I found the aiming to be precise and accurate: just a couple of minutes in, I was hitting bullseyes like an experienced Wild West gunfighter. The mini-games are simple and quick-it's obvious that LCT is just meant to whet your appetite for more deeper fare like The Umbrella Chronicles-but it's nice to have something to shoot at right out of the box.
The Price Is Right
I did see one potential grip about the Zapper: it snaps together in a way that "traps" the Wii Remote and Nunchuk inside of it. I wanted to try and disassemble it, just to see how easy it is to install and extract the Remote and the Nunchuk but I probably would have gotten reprimanded by the event staff. Still, I hope it all comes apart easily or it'll be a colossal pain in the butt.
With that said, I still have high hopes for the Wii Zapper. I'm a big fan of the light-gun genre and I'm hoping the Zapper encourages more developers to create games for the system. I'm also hoping the peripheral will enhance the overall experience for all the games that support it. The fact that it's priced at a reasonable twenty bucks also helps and definintely puts it on my radar this holiday season.
