Why the new mechanics? The main reason, Muramori explained, is that the older three-click system took players away from the visual nature of the game. Instead of looking at the animation of your character swinging and the beautiful courses you're playing on, you're really only focusing on the click meter. It takes you out of the game, and the new swing forces you to observe your golfer swinging, bringing you back into the visual nature of golf.
Hot Shots Staples
Other Hot Shots staples are still there--such as power shots, super backspin, etc--so series returnees should be very comfortable with Hot Shots 5. Getting into the new swing won't take more than a few minutes to get down, though mastering it to produce those tricky results will take some time and practice.
There are new camera options that provide more details about approach shots and there were a lot of noticeable new camera effects going on throughout the demo, which is one thing the Hot Shots team is very proud of. Muramori explained that he really likes the Tiger Woods PGA Tour series, but they don't do enough with the cinematic camera.
No word on specific online multiplayer features yet, but in Japan there is a cool new 8-player online mode that allows all 8 players to shoot on each hole at the same time. Hopefully that one will make the transition.
Hot Shots Golf 5 is still slated for an early 2008 release here in the States, so until then, I'll be sure to rub my Japanese copy in your face for the next few months, natch.
