Manhunt 2 releases this Halloween. But what did Rockstar compromise to warrant the new M rating?
Manhunt 2's been on quite a wild ride. And after a little retooling, the game is back and almost ready to reach the public. Rockstar brought the game back to us one more time before it releases on Halloween. The ESRB has dropped the Adults-Only rating, so now it's Mature for keeps.
The Wii version was the version of choice for this most recent demo. I got my hands on Manhunt 2 Wii a few months back before the whole ratings fiasco, so I knew a little bit about what to expect. Of course, what I was most curious about was how much the game had been changed to warrant the drop in rating from AO to M.
The executions have been distorted to meet the M rating standards.
To be honest, none of the gameplay has been compromised. The only thing that has changed is the visual presentation of the executions. If you've played the first Manhunt, you know what executions are-- gruesome ways to take care of your enemies after sneaking up on them. Instead of getting an unobscured view of the kill, there is a filter over the image so you can't completely see what's going on.
"Hold on a sec," you might say. "That's downright censorship!" Well, technically yes, but Sid and I saw it in action and we both agreed that it's really not that big of a deal. In fact, depending on the lightness or darkness of the in-game situation, some of the executions are more visible than others. Because the gameplay is exactly the same, you're not going to have a problem with the distortion unless you're a hardcore purist.
