Even though the brand new minute long Resident Evil 5 teaser trailer exposed at this year's E3 was over before most of us even realized what the hell we were watching, there were a couple of details about the fifth chapter in Capcom's long-standing survival horror series that were given away in the video, such as the game's drastically different locale (or at least, what will be one of RE5's locales).
This guy could whoop Leon Kennedy's ass any day.
Evil Resides in a Whole New Place
The E3 trailer shows us a dusty ghetto, most likely located in somewhere Haiti, with tin-roofed shacks, truck tires wedged into the dirt which are used by people as seats, deteriorating chain link fences, and goats walking around the streets. It's important to note the setting in RE5 because it's shown during the daytime, something that we've hardly ever seen in past Resident Evil games. Could it be that Capcom's next episode in their zombie slaughtering franchise is so frightening that they do not need to use nighttime or darkness as cheap devices to scare the player to death? Possibly.
More importantly, the environment is significant because if the game does take place in Haiti, there's a very high likelihood Resident Evil 5's story involves voodoo, the dominant religion in Haiti where zombies and zombie mythos first originated from. In the voodoo religion, it is believed that a corpse can be reanimated by bokors, who are sorcerers who practice both black and white magic. While this is purely speculation, there is a strong possibility that the game will go back to the roots of zombie folklore.
This mysterious character (creature?) in RE5 (shown in both pics) takes fashion tips from RE4's Dr. Salvador, except he doesn't need eyeslits to skin you alive.
Bloodthirsty Villagers and a New Enemy
The next thing we see in the trailer is a man with a terrified look on his face, who is probably on his way to becoming a zombie. The man is being inspected by another person as they grab onto his face. As the video continues, we are reunited with the unnamed character from first Resident Evil 5 trailer, whose head is kicked in by angry villagers. The rest of the trailer shows a man with aviator glasses shouting into a megaphone, a group of pissed off people armed with sickles and axes, a man being hung upside down by his ankles, someone bleeding out of their eye sockets, and a mysterious executioner with a bag over his head with ropes tied around it (you have to watch very closely as he's quite easy to miss).
Resident Evil 5 has a lot to live up to, especially considering RE4 was such a huge leap forward for the series. But it seems like Capcom is on the right track by not returning to hackneyed zombie stomping grounds like haunted mansions and dimly lit city streets. You can be almost certain that Resident Evil 5 will bring a whole new level of terror to the series. The game is still scheduled for release in 2008, and we'll keep you posted as new info surfaces.
These guys aren't happy and they want blood.
Even the logo is evil looking.
While it's not entirely clear whether or not Resident Evil 5 has "zombies" as they are stereotypically portrayed, something vile is on the loose.
