So Billy, what did you do today? Well ma, I jacked some cars, ran over some innocent pedestrians, and embarked on a career of violent crime.
The first two Grand Theft Auto games for the PlayStation caused quite a commotion with their plentiful violence and depiction of a life of crime. They were popular in spite of or because of this, but the fast driving action, and general mayhem also made for a compelling game. Now, with Grand Theft Auto 3 getting ready for a PS2 release in the fall, the development team at DMA has taken the game to a new level of anarchy. For those not in the know, the first two Grand Theft Auto games had you start off as a petty thief, stealing cars and making pickups and drop-offs. The graphics were 2D and the games played from an overhead perspective that made for a unique driving experience. Now, on the PS2, DMA is breaking with tradition and bringing GTA into a new era with 3D graphics.
Set in Liberty City, a knockoff of New York City, the game lets you drive pretty much anywhere you please in the open environments. The city is divided into three separate districts connected by tunnels and bridges, which open up as you play through the single player game: Industrial, Commercial, and Suburban.
Like its predecessors Grand Theft Auto 3, focuses on the havoc you cause while smashing and bashing cars as you try to deliver the goods and rise in rank as a criminal prodigy. However, there are some new twists to the action. Firstly, you'll be able to take control of not only any car on the street, but boats, helicopters, and airplanes as well.
The game now has a story mode that players must play through, working their way up through the criminal ranks, but they'll also be able to freelance on the side for extra money taking odd jobs like cab driver. However, for the plot driven elements, some missions need to be completed at a certain time of day. Changeable light and weather effects, as well as plenty of innocent pedestrians add to the sense that Grand Theft Auto takes place in a living world.
Grand Theft Auto will be ready to commit multiple felonies this fall.
