We get our hands on Manhunt 2. Does the game live up to its AO rating?
Manhunt 2 is hotter than hot coffee. For a game that didn't sell all that well the first time around, the first Manhunt did have somewhat of a cult following...at least enough to warrant a sequel.
Unlike a large percentage of the gaming media, including several people that work here at GamePro, I'm not into horror flicks. I don't watch much violent TV or many gory movies.
Daniel Lamb escapes from an insane asylum.
I especially don't like TV shows that deal with real-life death situations that are drawn out in detail by shows like Six Feet Under or Grey's Anatomy. Watching someone slowly die of cancer or vomit as a symptom of a brain tumor is just all too real to me. I guess I get a little unnerved by things that resemble everyday human suffering.
Which is why it's surprising that I really liked the original Manhunt. For someone who's pretty much indifferent to the horror genre, I played through the entire game in the dark with full surround sound and the noise-sensitive headset feature enabled. It was an intense game and an intense experience--one that made me jump now and again, but overall was a lot of fun.
But my experience with Manhunt didn't leave me with the emotional aftertaste that I sometimes get from depressing or violent movies. Why?
They do it in Pictures
Big-name movies and Television often deal with real-life plot situations, and even if they are especially far-fetched or ridiculous, they still get enough Hollywood treatment to make them seem real. Hell, that's why we like them, right? It's easy to get lost in a good movie or TV show, or even imagine yourself in one of the character's role. And even if it's an over-the-top, 'probably would never happen' horror film like Saw, the fact that the events in the movie are happening to real humans makes it all the more effective in creating the feeling of fear.
