Fly the unfriendly skies. Ace Combat 6 is the Xbox 360's ace in the hole.
If you've never been big on Namco's Ace Combat series, now looks like the prime time to get in. We spent a nice long amount of time with Fires of Liberation on a recent trip overseas to see and play the first Ace game on the latest generation of hardware. To say the least, this is the rocket boost the series needs.
The Friendly Skies
Fires of Liberation, of course, makes the obvious technical transition to the Xbox 360 with some truly impressive visual effects emanating from jets, weapons, explosions, and smoke, but the overall look of the massive cities and wonderfully distant horizons is really what sets the latest Ace apart from the rest of the series (and probably from other flight sims). On the heads-up display, you get a really nice video presentation of your craft in real-time.
The new direction of gameplay is what makes the game so different from the rest of the series. A new feature called the Dynamic Operations System changes the way a mission progresses that is very different from the shorter, more focused battles in the PS2 Ace games. Missions now take place in larger wars that scale huge playable areas. It's entirely up to the player to decide which of up to six smaller operations they want to take on first, and the result of each will affect the overall end result of the mission.
