Unsurprisingly, Ubisoft's research doesn't end with weaponry. The team has also kept a constant eye on today's headlines, extrapolating an all-too-plausible future to serve as the game's setting. EndWar takes place in the aftermath of a cooperative effort between the USA and Europe, in which a space-based defense grid has been employed to permanently end the threat of nuclear weapons. The grid can destroy ICBMs and high-altitude stealth bombers with equal ease, promising a world free from nuclear devastation.
Unfortunately, without mutually-assured destruction to serve as a deterrent, global conflict becomes a very real possibility. In 2020, when it's revealed that the world's oil reserves are much smaller than previously thought, war becomes inevitable. The planet's three superpowers (the USA, Russia, and the European Federation) order the generals of their respective armies into conflict to secure their economies' stability. That conflict escalates into World War III: a modern war to end all wars.
Every player in EndWar is A.I.-controlled
Tools of Command
Which is where the players step into the fold. EndWar will allow you to act as a general in one of those armies (in multiplayer, that is; gameplay in the single-player campaign will ricochet back and forth between all three superpowers). You'll have complete control over the tactical actions of your army, and will be responsible for everything they do. But here's the thing: Every single member of your forces is AI-controlled. You have full authority to command individual units or entire squads, but they will carry out those orders without your direct intervention.
