Preview: LittleBigPlanet

Big things come in small packages.

Since it's debut at GDC, LittleBigPlanet has been created a BigBig buzz. Everyone wants to hear, see, and play more of what is has to offer. Fortunately, we got some solid info from Sony Gamer's Day on Wednesday in addition to what we already saw at GDC.

Sony talked about its awesome reception at GDC, and Phil already described it as a start to Gaming 3.0. The video shown today, though, dives deeper into the character customization options that the final game will offer. Until know, we only really saw these rag-doll characters that had already been created. The video today ran through a heaping helping of options to distinguish your very own little rag doll.

Some of the customization options shown were:

  • Outfits
  • Sunglasses (including star sunglasses)
  • Facial expressions
  • Helmets
  • Jackets
  • Mustaches
  • Top hats
  • Life preservers
  • A cardboard box that you can put over your character's head, then slap fake eyes and other facial features on

It's so amazing how much personality can go into adding simple elements to these cute characters to make the feel like-like. The facial expressions of the characters are incredibly animated, constantly changing like in real life.

We also got to play the GDC demo level with three other players, which is the first time the game has been playable to the media in any capacity. The good news is that it's really simple to control. Part of the fun is finding out how to get to the next place or overcome the next obstacle. The only problem right now is that sometimes it's hard to do exactly what you want and it may take a couple tries to do it. That's not always a bad thing, but if a LittleBigPlanet level is designed for fluidity, that could get interrupted. But the game has such a feel-things-out nature that I think when it all comes together, it will break down some expectations of what a console gaming experience should be. Look for on LittleBigPlanet as we approach E3 this July.
