Beautiful Katamari (Page 2 of 2)

The Katamari series has never relied on heavy story elements to drive the gameplay, but there is a humorous, carefree charm that aptly compliments the game's simple, fun play and colorful atmosphere. And saving the universe without a gun or a hint of machismo is always a welcome change of pace. Sorry, Serious Sam.

Beautiful Online Features

Beautiful Katamari will also use console gaming's biggest online community in two types of online multiplayer games. Players compete to either be the first to a particular Katamari size, or the fastest to pick up a set number of objects.

The team is planning to use online leaderboards, not just for simple logging of Katamari sizes, but for abnormal categories like "Weirdest Katamari." This will all be centered on an interactive lobby, though most of the specifics regarding online play are still being ironed out. No official word on an Xbox Live demo as of yet.

With its technical prowess, downloadable content and online multiplayer by way of Xbox Live, Beautiful Katamari is probably going to be the longest extension of the Katamari franchise, especially in terms of additional content down the road. And unlike the PS2 games, this one will release simultaneously in Japan and North America. With no unnecessary changes to the already-established formula, it should be a smooth slope into the new-generation of hardware.
