LAIR sure is lookin' good, and here are 11 new screenshots and a hands-on to prove it.
Last week we got the full shebang of a presentation on LAIR, the upcoming dragon-based action game from for the PS3. So far this game is one of the more promising PS3 title's for 2007, partly because of the stellar graphics highlighted by some beautiful mapping and textures, but more so because it is just fun to play, floating through
LAIR developer Factor 5 says that LAIR will attempt to get the maximum out of the PS3, which seems like a pretty daunting task considering how early we are in the hardware's life cycle. That said, though, the game is a technical showcase and there's no denying it. The game runs in 1080p, and unlike the last time we saw the game, there is relatively no slowdown. It's currently in an alpha state, development-wise, so there is a lot of time left before the game ships in July.
The big gameplay mechanism here is the use of tilt on the Sixaxis to control the flight of the dragon. It's probably the best use of the Sixaxis so far, and this is mainly because the controls aren't oversensitive like the racing games that have tried utilizing tilt. Here, there's not as much of a tendency to over-correct, though it does take some getting used to. A nice feature is the ability to do a 180-degree turn by lifting up on the controller with both hands. You'll actually use this quite a bit, as it comes in handy.
The combat in LAIR is more than just fireballs, though a great deal of it does come in that way. But there are also physical attacks, which are like hand-to-hand combat but performed from dragon to dragon. This works by using "motion gestures" by, for example, swinging to Sixaxis to the right or left to slam a rival dragon.
