Global Defense Forces
Character Classes
- Soldier: has the widest range of weapons plus a small health boost
- Medic: revives and heals other players
- Engineer: builds fortifications (bridges, turrets) and repairs assets
- Field Ops: deploys long-rang artillery and air strikes; hands out ammo
- Covert Ops: scouting , spying, and sniping
The GDF's stock assault rifle boasts decent scope abilities and solid overall offensive power, while the shotgun dishes out heavy damage at close range and features a large ammo reservoir. The new rocket launcher, a Quake trademark, sees two key upgrades: vehicle lock-on and a huge blast radius ala Halo 2. But it's also saddled with a short firing delay, lessening its devastating possibilities, and will slow your movement when readied. The N93 GPMG can rapidly drop infantry but has a hard time punching holes through vehicles. Good thing it's loaded with 100 rounds, huh? Finally, the sniper rifle boasts over 10 rounds per clip, giving it a bit more heft than the rifles of Battlefield 2142.
The human sidearms include the machine pistol, which hits hard up close but suffers from a tiny ammo clip, and the silenced pistol.
The Strogg
Character Classes
- Aggressor: has the widest range of weapons plus a small health boost
- Technician: revives and heals players; converts dead foes into spawn points
- Constructor: support class that builds turrets and repairs assets
- Oppressor: can call in air strikes and massive artillery strikes
- Infiltrator: can assume the form of dead GDF members
The Strogg raiders feature a similar but more sci-fi group of weapons. The standard carbine is the lacerator, a solid shooter with good accuracy and damage. The hyberblaster is a step up, and works much like the minigun from Unreal Tournament. You can dampen the hyberblaster's wild recoil by lying prone while firing, and it's reasonably effective against vehicles. For vehicle showdowns, the obliterator is indispensable. It's clumsy against infantry but can lock on to and shred enemy tanks and planes. The nail gun fires a shotgun-like spray of barbs, and the rail gun serves as the Strogg's version of the sniper rifle.
The Strogg agressors come armed with lightning pistols, which are a tweaked version of Quake 3's "shaft." The lightning pistol is particularly deadly because it's effective against close-range and medium-range targets, making it generally superior to the human's machine pistol.
Both sides carry grenades A basic explosive device that can effectively flush out rooms and staircases. Both sides also have a simple melee attack, in the form of the combat knife for the GDF and the wrist spikes for the Strogg forces. Both are potent weapons, much like the knife in Counter-strike.
