  • Ninja Gaiden Sigma has new bosses, improved enemies, and glorious 1080p graphics.
  • Rachel is now a playable character in 3 new chapters.

Those skeptical that Team Ninja will deliver only a glossed-over version of Ninja Gaiden Black on the PlayStation 3 will literally drop jaw when they feast their eyes and hands on Ninja Gaiden Sigma, the most impressive technical performance we've yet seen on the PS3. Running in 1080p and 60 frames per second with real-time self shading, Sigma is shaping up to be a feat for the PS3, but it's the patented Gaiden gameplay that brings everything together in another impressive Ninja experience.

The Time Is Right

Sigma's timing couldn't be better. The PS3's early game offerings, sans MotorStorm, are average at best. Sigma's spring release should invigorate current PS3 owners, and perhaps even entice new game junkies to dish out 500+ clams.

We know Sigma is a remake of Black, but what do you get that makes it worthwhile? For starters, Tecmo is calling Simga a re-modernization of a great action game, and it's updated to suit the current hardware. Team Ninja's goal is to bring in as many new people as possible to the franchise, as well as prove to existing Gaiden fans that Simga is worth their time and energy.

What's New(er)

For starters, the game looks fantastic-a hypothetical slap in the face of other early PS3 game designers. It's fast, it's pretty, and it sports a good amount of new material worthwhile for any action fan. The biggest additions are 3 playable chapters as Rachel-there are 19 total chapters-that intersect with Ryu's. She'll sport her War Hammer, which is looking quite deadly, and her move set and overall style of play is much different from Ryu's. The mission mode returns from Black, but overall the real sell her is seeing Ninja Gaiden Sigma proves that the incredible hype surrounding the game is indeed validated.
