Final Fantasy X

SquareSoft's next-gen RPG is revealed! In this First Look, you?ll find gorgeous screen shots, the two main characters, some story details, and other juicy tidbits.

With Final Fantasy IX for the PlayStation just out the door, gamers are already looking forward to SquareSoft's next Final Fantasy game: Final Fantasy X, which will be the first PlayStation 2 game in the Final Fantasy series. With the Final Fantasy movie scheduled for release this summer, SquareSoft is showing no signs of slowing down.

In Final Fantasy X, the 17-year-old hero, Tidus, is an "optimistic, unfaltering sportsman with a will to win." Not surprisingly, he's a competitor in Blitzball, an underwater sport. Tidus' counterpart, heroine Yuna, is a 17-year-old Summoner and is daughter to High Summoner Braska. Fiercely determined, Yuna will have to use her magic abilities to save the day.

In a break from the PlayStation Final Fantasy games, FFX will have voice-overs instead of mere text, adding a new layer to the audio. Square is also boasting that the character's facial expressions will change in real-time. As for the gameplay, you can bet on more of the high-quality experience that previous Final Fantasy games have provided. New, however, will be a 3D field map that orients itself in the direction that your character is moving?a very handy addition to finding your way around the FFX world. Square also promises "natural camera work" hinting that the camera won?t be static as it was in previous games.

Not much to chew on, but these juicy tidbits are sure to whet the appetites of RPG fans everywhere. So take a look at the first Final Fantasy X screen shots.

After the battle?
