Fallout 3 headed to Xbox 360?

Bethesda Softworks to work their magic on the seminal RPG series.

Fallout 3 was actually already under development at Interplay when that company went boots up, but that doesn't mean freedom-loving fans of that RPG series are going to be left high and dry forever. Bethesda announced back in 2004 that it had acquired the rights to the series for not much more than a cool million, and would be working on a sequel at some point... but there are juicier details afoot now.

It turns out the next chapter in the post-apocalyptic saga will use a modified version of the Gamebryo engine, the same powerhouse tapped for Bethesda's own The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Presumably this means that the old isometric viewpoint is toast, and gamers will be able to play from first- and third-person perspectives. It's actually a remarkably good fit, when you think about it: Fallout was a trailblazer in the area of open-ended RPG design, and Bethesda has shown time and time again that this is exactly where their strengths lie.

Bethesda has promised that the quirky, ironic tone of the original games will be maintained, and will likely be rated M. While the game is definitely being developed for the PC, and has been worked on in earnest since late 2006, no console specifics have been released. Still, given the success of the Xbox 360 version of Oblivion, and the interest that's building in the upcoming PS3 version, it seems like a no-brainer that this long-awaited new chapter would follow suit.
