[UPDATE] RedOctane comments: Neversoft takes over Guitar Hero

In a surprise move, Activision developer Neversoft has announced they are seeking developers for an as-of-yet-unannounced Guitar Hero game.

[UPDATE] We've received official word from the higher ups at RedOctane commenting on the GH development switch. "Neversoft will indeed be working on the Guitar Hero franchise, though we have yet to confirm what exactly it will be." The RedOctane representative also mentioned an announcement would be made "shortly, and will have further details then."

Previous entries in the series were developed by Harmonix, which has been recently bought out by MTV.RedOctane, which was also recently purchased by Activision, served as publisher on the first game and aided in development efforts.

Neversoft, best known for their Tony Hawk games and the cult western shooter GUN, is something of a natural choice for Activision. Still, the development is likely to be scrutinized by hardcore Guitar Hero fans. There's no word on whether the Neversoft project would be considered a true "Guitar Hero 3," or if it's related to the much-rumored 80's rock edition said to be under development.

A visit to the Neversoft site reveals a splash page split down the middle, with the left-hand portion clearly sporting the Guitar Hero logo and the announcement "Positions Available." As if that's not enough confirmation, an anonymous source told GameDaily that the jobs being filled are related to the as-yet unannounced Guitar Hero III.

The Neversoft is posted below, and it makes no bones about the fact that the developer is fully engaged on the Guitar Hero franchise. We hope to have comments from RedOctane and Activision shortly -- stay tuned.

WOW. Talk about coming from out of left field.

Considering that Activision has said nothing about this leads me to believe that the Neversoft site announcement may be a screw-up, but it's impossible to say for now. Neversoft are a talented bunch of guys, however, and I'm sure they could add some punch to any future GH products. We'll just have to wait and see.
