UPDATE: First PS3 shots of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Bethesda has released the very first images of the PlayStation 3 version of smash-hit RPG The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

The images, the first to be seen of the widely anticipated PS3 port, appear to show a game that's virtually identical in appearance to the previously released Xbox 360 and PC games.

It's not yet known whether the PS3's advanced Cell processor or Blu-ray Disc capabilities will factor into this version, or whether the smaller video memory footprint will impact its texture sizes. In response to our questions, Bethesda's Pete Hines offered the following insight to GamePro: "We definitely use both [the Cell and Blu-ray] to get the best performance and visuals possible. But I don't know if you could say we make special use of them." But he followed that up by saying we'd soon find out for ourselves. You guessed it -- we can't wait!

The PS3 version of Oblivion is expected in early-to-mid spring of 2007. A PSP version, called The Elder Scrolls Travels: Oblivion is expected sometime in 2007, though no images or information is known at this time.
