The Detroit Free Press is reporting that Joel Zumaya's teammates are in agreement that his three game stretch off the pitcher's mound for wrist and forearm inflammation wasn't due to exertion on the field, but rather too much time spent strumming a plastic piece while playing Guitar Hero on the PlayStation 2.
During a radio interview with WXYT-AM yesterday, president and general manager Dave Dombrowski said that the team's trainers were of the opinion that Zumaya's physical trauma was more consistent with the motions of a guitar player than those of a big league pitcher. Zumaya was asked to lay off the axe, which he did.
What's next? Quarterbacks that can't throw the long bomb because they've been playing too much Wii Tennis? Tony Hawk unable to skate because of a Dance Dance Revolution addiction? Whatever the case, the sporting field isn't the only place athletes like to get their game on.
