Bungie has just announced that lucky Xbox 360 owners can look forward to an online beta for Halo 3, as well as new maps for Halo 2, in the spring of 2006.
The Xbox Live multiplayer public beta of Halo 3, what Microsoft calls "a pre-release version of the multiplayer experience of Halo 3," will land in an unspecified time next spring.
In another interesting note, Halo 2 owners can look forward to new multiplayer maps for that game, available as premium downloadables via Xbox Live. The release date is also planned for spring 2007. One catch: the new Halo 2 maps are exclusive to the Xbox 360 version. Sorry, Xbox Classic owners!
Bungie is planning to use the Halo 3 public beta as a way to better connect with its fan base and create a more polished multiplayer mode for 2007's Halo 3. The announcement confirms this, saying the beta will present "gamers worldwide to participate in the development of Halo 3."
The release also trumpets the five-year anniversary of the Halo series. According to Microsoft, all the Halo releases have sold 14.7 million copies worldwide, racking up nearly $700 million in sales.
