Exclusive: Online, Customizations Revealed for Ridge Racer 7

Nacmo-Bandai has unveiled an exclusive list of new features and details planned for the PS3 launch game Ridge Racer 7, including online play, car customizations, and vehicle models.

According to Namco-Bandai, Ridge Racer 7 will take full advantage of the PlayStation 3's online network -- though few details are known about it at this time -- by offering up to 14-player online races (as currently planned). The online gameplay will include global rankings, downloadable content, and a new "World Connector, which allows players from around the world to race together.

The game will support two-player offline mode racing, as well, and is currently described as being in a 75% complete state.

Car customization also figures heavily into Ridge Racer 7, a welcome addition considering that it's the first game in the series to offer customization options. Namco-Bandai is promising as many as 375,000 car exterior combos, and as many as 7,150 combinations of performance-tuning features. Custom cars can be taken online.

The developers are planning for 22 race courses (44 when reverse layouts are included), 40 models of race cars, and the Ridge State Grand Prix, a new main mode that consists of over 160 races.

  • Tires/suspension: Adjust your drift tendency and boost your cornering performance.
  • Nitrous kit: Strengthen your normal charge or ultimate charge, change your number of nitrous tanks or nitrous duration, and adjust your auto charge features.
  • Plug-in unit: Add special functions to your car such as a 100% reliable rocket starter or a device to analyze the amount of nitrous in rival cars.

Nitrous Customization

Original machine maker nitrous kits can be powered up two levels from Stage 0 to Stage 2. Namco-Bandai will allow players to participate in various races held in Ridge State, such as a "UFRA single event", to buy or power up nitrous kits through machine makers.

Stage 0 (equipped on the vehicle when purchased): This basic nitrous unit is only capable "single nitrous", and consumes one nitrous tank at a time.

Stage 1 (purchased from car maker): Power up to the stage 1 nitrous kit and you will be able to use multiple tanks at once with "double nitrous" or "triple nitrous" and experience even more intense acceleration.

Stage 2 (purchased from car maker): By powering up to the stage 2 nitrous kit, you will be able to use nitrous charge techniques that take advantage of high speeds after using nitrous (= ultimate charge).

Galaxian Nitrous: the same as the stage 2 upgrade, but you can choose from three nitrous charge methods: Normal Charge, which functions the same as with a stage 2 nitrous kit; Normal Charge U, which increases ultimate charge power, but reduces basic charge power; and Normal Charge B, which increases basic charge power, but reduces ultimate charge power.

Consumer tec charge types are basically the same as stage 2 types, but here you can choose from four nitrous types: Standard Nitrous (The same nitrous type as stage 2); Flex Nitrous, (in which nitrous is activated as long as the nitrous button is held down); Long Nitrous (equipped with two 1.5x capacity nitrous tanks); and High Nitrous (utilizes compressed nitrous, cutting the effect time in half, but greatly increasing acceleration).

We'll have more details on Ridge Racer 7 as the launch approaches.
