Nintendo: Wii Won't Play DVD Movies

Nintendo has confirmed that the Wii console, due to arrive on November 19th for $249.99, won't be capable of playing DVD movies or videos.
DVD playback: Not for the Wii
The official Wii announcement noted that the new console "will play single- or double-layered 12-centimeter optical discs for the Wii console," as well as smaller 8-centimeter GameCube games. Nowhere does it list DVD playback, though the feature was mentioned during E3 2005 when the "Revolution" was first unveiled.
One Nintendo PR said that the company originally planned for a DVD add on for the Wii, but opted to drop to feature to keep costs down -- especially considering that DVD players are already a cheap and plentiful accessory.
