Nintendo is hoping that Link can save the day yet again

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess made an appearance of sorts at Nintendo's Wii launch details party in the Big Apple.

As previously reported Twilight Princess will be the first party star at launch. Not expected was the fact that Excite Truck will be the only other Nintendo game to show for launch.

The version of Twilight Princess at the announcement was a slightly tweaked version of the demo at E3 this year. It featured the same two playable segments: Link fishing and a combat workout/obstacle course which led up to the same boss fight. Fishing was...well, fishing, although the reeling motion with the nunchuk is just as fun as it ever was. Bass fishing games will be making a comeback, in fact the fish of note here was called Hyrule Bass.

The sword and bow section felt only slightly tighter than it did at E3. Of course, the new sword slashing motion using the remote was in play. As with Ubisoft's Red Steel yakuza sword fighting, the strokes and counterstrikes become intuitive and instinctive with this technique.

It was disappointing that the Zelda Wii E3 replay was the best Nintendo could muster for this event. Maybe not as disappointing as the announcement that Twilight Princess for GameCube will not be released until December 11, but it put a palpable dampener on the day for Zelda and Nintendo fans alike.

It just goes to show that the Nintendo braintrust is placing much responsibility on Link's formidable back to carry the Wii launch, so they don't want to lessen Twilight Princess's impact on launch day in any way. No doubt they're even counting on Zelda's allure to convince the hardcore faithful that November 19 is the day to return to Hyrule.
