The revelation comes from an article posted by MTV News, which details some brief statements from Insomniac Games' spokesperson Ryan Schneider. "We're going to fit more on a Blu-Ray disc than you could on an HD DVD," he told MTV.

The HD DVD and Blu-ray formats are competing disc technologies. HD DVD handles about 15 gigabytes if storage; the Blu-ray handles 25 gigabytes. According to the piece, Resistance's assets are currently hovering around 22 gigabytes. In contrast, most PC and Xbox 360 games typically top off at roughly 8 gigabytes.

The massive storage size for Resistance could serve as a sign that the Blu-ray format will actually benefit gamers.

Other key details from the article:

  • motion-sensing functions will allow you to rifle butt aliens by jabbing out one side of the PS3 controller
  • Sony claims that the online experience will exceed Xbox Live titles
  • 40-player online games, with some form of ranking system

Wow. Seems almost impossible, doesn't it? But in its defense, the article is pretty specific about the data breakdown: graphics and level data take up about 21 of the game's 22 gigabytes; the rest is audio.

But it boggles the mind. What if you scratch the disc?!

We should find out tomorrow...
