Federal Judge Rejects New Video Game Law

A federal judge throws out a pending state law that would have fined minors $25 for trying to buy or rent mature-rated games.

An article by the Associated Press confirms that U.S. District Judge James Rosenbaum has gotten rid of a pending law in Minnesota that was to take effect on July 31, 2006. The state law would have issued anyone under the age of 17 a $25 fine for attempting to buy or rent any games rated mature or adults only.

Rosenbaum explains his decision, saying that it is "impossible" to prove that violent video games are responsible for violent behavior from the evidence presented. He adds that, "there is a paucity of evidence linking the availability of video games with any harm to Minnesota's children at all."

The law also would have made video game retailers post signs warning customers of the fine.
