Today, Rockstar Games confirmed that the next game in the Grand Theft Auto series, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories for the PSP, will ship on October 17, 2006.

Vice City Stories is expected to retail at $49.99, a ten-dollar hike over Liberty City Stories. PSP games typically launch at a lower $39.99 price.

Also revealed is the box art for the game, which appears to depict a few familiar faces: "Big" Mitch Baker, a biker gang leader, and Umberto Robina, a Cuban mobster, both from the PlayStation 2 game GTA: Vice City. No word on whether cult legends Lee Majors or Danny Trejo will reprise their performances from the original Vice City.

There's no word on whether a PS2 version is planned for release, though the last PSP Grand Theft Auto game, Liberty City Stories, recently made the jump to the PS2 and enjoyed enormous sales.

THE VERDICT by Sid Shuman Sid Shuman's Avatar

I really, really, really hope Rockstar does more with Vice City Stories than it did with Liberty City Stories. That was a great PSP game, but it didn't make the jump to the PS2 all that well. For a PS2 games, the gameplay felt cramped and confined. And the storyline was only so-so.

Twenty bucks says this puppy lands on the PS2 by next spring.
