Nintendo of America has responded to reports that some Nintendo DS Lite users are experiencing cracks in the plastic hinge that houses the system's LCD screen.

The statement, sent to GamePro, acknowledges that a small number of users have experienced "small cosmetic cracks" in the screen hinges of their DS Lite handhelds, in a story broken by Joystiq and MaxConsole.net and later reported by GamePro. This is Nintendo of America's first official statement on the matter.
NOA adds that less than 0.02 percent of the total number of DS Lites sold has the problem, and that the crack "in no way impacts the. . . integrity of the DS Lite." The statement also encourages users with a DS Lite crack to contact Nintendo's customer service department.

Here is the statement in its entirety:
"In the US, the reported number of small cosmetic cracks in the plastic hinge of DS Lite systems represents less than 0.02 percent of the total units sold. This cosmetic issue in no way impacts the gameplay or integrity of the DS Lite. Nintendo stands behind the quality of our products and encourages DS Lite owners to contact our Customer Service Department if they are not happy with the functionality of their systems."

I just got this DS on January and just today I saw the crack. I had a NERF case over it so I didnt notice until I realize the upper portion couldnt stand up like it used to (correct me if im wrong). I seriously doubt just .7 of the household has this problem, not everyone goes online and searches for this you know. It basically could be 70% of the people who bought the product all have the same problem. The least they can do is replace it, thats all. This thing isnt cheap. Good thing this was given to me or else i'd go berserk and do something crazy like call their customer service reps. Not durable at all. I bet their other consoles didnt have the same problem in terms of durability (the older versions).

0.02% cannot be right. this is the 3rd time my hinge cracked. i sent it in twice. my little sisters ds hinge broke so you can pull the top screen out. my brothers old ds is 3rd hand and still running fine (3rd hand being he being there were 2 owners before him using it) my sisters ds is still in warrenty (6 months left worth) and they want 75 bucks. i could replace it for 30-50 my self kidbuu, the screen kinda droops over the L and R buttons so it makes a bit of a difference

I have Also had the Exact Same NON-Warranty covered problem. For the 3rd time now!!! All 3 times- the hinge, on the right side appears as a minor crack, Same spot EVERY Time!!! NOA claims to be .02% defect and the rest is from abuse!! NOA do you truly think we believe that you have concluded, from testing, we are ALL creating the EXACT Same, NOT Similar EXACT, damage Multiple times ?!!? This is an INSULT to your Loyal customers!! I Unfortunately happened upon this post AFTER paying NOA $57.50 USD for repair and being made to feel as if I should be Grateful at that amount! WTF? OK. Here's the kicker. My 8 year old son's Original DS is STILL Fine after years of drops on tile floors. I am his 30+ year old father and have had this DS Lite NEVER touch Anything but my hands or a shelf! If there is Not already a Lawsuit against NOA, there Should be!! Does Nintendo NOT remember the Xbox 360 red ring issue?? C'mon NOA. All we are asking for is a product that works!!

Well!! I have had 3 ds lites and guess what happened yesterday! My DS Onyx Black's hinges cracked! on both sides! Both of my other DS's (The First being the Polar White, second the Crimson Red or whatever it was)'s hinges cracked and on the white, it no longer turns on, and the red, it randomly shuts off, and sometimes it doesn't turn on for extended periods of time. I go to a boarding school, so I have no chance of taking it to an office, and I can't ship packages, so I am screwed! I NEVER had this problem with my phatie (although... Metroid Prime Hunters and Pokemon Ranger made me feel like my hand was gonna fall off lol) and I was given it as a present used (My friend won the Phantom Hourglass one in a drawing) and I have no idea when it was purchased, so no in-warrenty repairs! Nor do I have a warrenty. LOL. What should I do? I can't afford a new one, (damn I've already bought 3) and I bought myself a laptop so I have no money. Help!
