Dead Rising: Too Gory for Germany

Capcom's Xbox 360 zombie-fest Dead Rising has been officially denied a rating by Germany's USK ratings board for its depictions of violence. But will it be officially banned?

According to a Gamasutra report, Germany's Maintenance Software Self-Check ratings board, or USK, considers the game too bloody for gamers of all ages. Games that do not receive an official rating by this board are not sold in the country; such games are often banned by a separate government entity, the Federal Department for Media Harmful to Young Persons. There's no word on whether that board will officially ban the game, but it's possible.

Dead Rising puts you in the shoes of a photojournalist-turned-zombie hunter, who fends off armies of the undead in a tribute to George Romero's horror film Dawn of the Dead. Dead Rising depicts tremendous violence, but its over-the-top visual style veers towards comic-book camp. The game is scheduled for release in Europe this September.

Dead Rising is hardly the first violent game to face the wrath of the German government. Manhunt, Command & Conquer, and Doom were also banned when first submitted to the board.
