Square Enix Denies Report of Final Fantasy XI Sequel

Square Enix has officially denied a report that claims the company is working on a sequel to its hit online RPG Final Fantasy XI.

On July 14th, Nikkei.net reported that a sequel to the MMO game Final Fantasy XI was in the works. According to a GameSpot translation of the article, the game would land on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and next-gen Windows Vista PCs.

For its part, Square Enix immediately rebuked the report, stating that the company "did not make such an announcement" and that it has "not made any decisions resembling those detailed in [the Nikkei report]." The announcement goes on to acknowledge that Square is currently working on a "completely new" MMO game for next-gen consoles. The announcement also pledges further support for the company's current MMO, Final Fantasy XI.

Beyond that, Square Enix has not responded to inquiries on the report, leaving its official press release as the only official statement. But as the GameSpot translation notes, if the Nikkei.net report has any validity, the Windows Vista mention points to a 2007 release date -- the consumer version of Vista doesn't launch until early 2007.

This is not the first time that Square Enix has scolded members of the press for publishing unconfirmed reports of the company's upcoming plans.
