God of War Director: I'm Sick of Making "Epic" Games

Is the director of God of War, one of the most successful action games in recent memory, really ready to give up "epic" games? A recent blog post confirms that the game developer is ready to move into fresh territory.

Could this be the end for Kratos?

God of War director David Jaffe has revealed his true feelings about the action-adventure genre on his blog. "Since God Of War, I have lost interest in the genre of single player action/adventure games," he writes. Is Jaffe done with single-player-focused games for good? "I don't know," he admits.

Jaffe explains his feelings by speaking from the perspective as a developer who has actually designed "one these damned epic things," adding that he "no longer [has] any interest in making these kinds of games." Jaffe highlights the difficulty in making this type of game, admitting that while they are fun to play, the developer must "struggle for days" just to create one worthwhile moment. "And then, when it's done," he continues, "you gotta get back to work and make another one and then another one."

On his blog, Jaffe also stated that having a story-heavy game limits the overall interactive experience and that he doesn't "want to tell stories with my games anymore." His plans for the future revolve around making only games that "fully and only embrace interactivity in the purest sense." As examples, he lists "sports games, multiplayer games, racing games" and even Flash-based games found on AddictingGames.com.

How are Jaffe's early experiences in working with "pure" games? In the blog, he admits that he's "having a blast so far."

THE VERDICT by Sid Shuman Sid Shuman's Avatar

Wow, now there's something I wouldn't have expected. I think Jaffe deserves credit for refusing to rest on his laurels. After all, the man could have rode out the rest of his career by churning out endless sequels to God of War and been plenty successful.

But I'm curious what game genre he'll ultimately choose. I personally think multiplayer online games are the next wave. Any theories on Jaffe's next move?
