In a PSM interview, SCEA President Kazuo Hirai confirms that Sony has not promised a $59.99 price point for PlayStation 3 games and that the price may be, if anything, higher.
If [PS3 games] become a bit higher than fifty-nine bucks, don't ding me"
-- Sony exec Kazuo Hirai to PSM
In PSM's August 2006 issue, Kazuo Hirai clarified that no Sony representative has yet officially announced the final price point for PlayStation 3 games, or confirmed the popular theory that PS3 titles will retail at $59.99 like Xbox 360 games. Hirai seems to shoot down an enormous price increase, saying "it would be a bit of a stretch to think that [Sony] could suddenly turn around and say PS3 games now $99.99."
But Hirai also left open the possibility of game prices that are north of $59.99, saying that "if it becomes a bit higher than fifty-nine bucks don't ding me, but, again, as I said, I don't expect it to be a hundred bucks."
Is the worlds ready for $70-dollar PS3 games? I know I'm not.
I have no problem paying a premium price for quality, but games like Warhawk and Resistance just aren't going to get me to shell out that kind of money. Of course, we still don't know final pricing details, so it's too soon to say.
