Oblivion Mod Adds Online Multiplayer

A resourceful modder has figured out a way to hack online multiplayer gameplay into the hit RPG The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. It's rough, but a tantalizing image of possibilities to come.

The modification, called "MultiTES4," is only compatible with the Windows PC version of the game.

Though it's only in a crude "alpha" state, the game ties together a server application, a client application, and mod file to allow two players to explore Cyrodiil together. The current version only supports basic two-player multiplayer, and doesn't include more advanced features such as deathmatch or even quest sharing.

At the moment, the following haven't been implemented: time/day/year synchronization, quest sharing, deathmatch, cell/world synchronization...err, pretty much everything else you can think of."

Still, it's an impressive sign of things to come. In the next version, the author is hoping to include eight-player multiplayer connectivity, as well as "a simple form of player deathmatch" and possibly Capture the Flag.
