GamePro.com first broke the news that the PC version of Halo 2 wouldn't allow for cross-platform gameplay with the Xbox version. That news comes despite Microsoft's push for upcoming PC and Xbox 360 games to support the company's new cross-platform "Live Anywhere" standard.

The Bungie.net piece doesn't offer many specifics, though it does confirm a few lingering questions about the port:

  • The possibility of "a few new maps"
  • Players will browse for multiplayer servers; the Xbox version's auto-server function is not supported
  • Support for 16-player games (max)
  • Players can use Windows Mobile phones to browse their friends list and view player achievements
  • New support for text chat

As GamePro.com first reported in mid-May, there's still no set release date for Halo 2 on Windows Vista. But several top Microsoft employees have estimated that the game is likely to ship in early 2007.
